The first Toshiba SMMS VRF systems to be installed in the UK are providing both cooling and heating when needed for a substantial extension to the Kingswood ASDA Superstore at Hull. ASDA appreciates SMMS from Toshiba

Solution

This R410A system is an energy efficient solution. It requires only a 16 Amp three phase ring main, which is a 50% reduction in electricity supply over previous systems. The Toshiba patented dual inverter technology spreads the operating load between units, reducing wear and, importantly, reducing noise. With the inverter control there is no 'kick-in' noise either. This was an important consideration to ASDA as, like many others, this supermarket is sited near housing.

Using R410A the refrigerant charge can be 45% less than in R407C systems. And there are significant performance benefits as even in the unlikely event of 100% capacity being needed the EER is 3.8 - obviously this becomes much higher at more typical part load operation.

The four Toshiba SMMS outdoor units at Kingswood are sited in a services area in the loading bay car park while the ceiling cassettes are suspended in an exposed services installation above the five aisles of the extended sales floor, below an additional mezzanine floor.

The seventeen 7.1 kW indoor units have been sprayed white and look attractive. A new version of Toshiba's Dyna-doctor diagnostic tool was piloted on the installation, checking the commissioning - which went well and impressing the technical team with its versatility. This installation also takes advantage of Toshiba's remote monitoring and Interactive Intelligence control systems.
