Heat Pump vs Heat Recovery VRF: What’s the Difference?

When choosing a VRF air conditioning system, you'll often see two options: heat pump and heat recovery. Both can provide heating and cooling, but the key difference is how they deliver it across a building.

What is heat pump VRF?
A heat pump VRF system can provide either heating or cooling to the connected areas. For example, during summer the system might operate in cooling mode across the building, while during colder months it can switch to heating. This can make heat pump VRF a good option for buildings where different areas generally require the same operating mode at the same time.

What is heat recovery VRF?
Heat recovery VRF
offers greater flexibility. A heat recovery system can provide heating to one area while cooling another at the same time. Imagine a hotel where south-facing rooms require cooling while another part of the building needs heating, or an office with different temperature requirements across its zones. Rather than choosing one mode for the whole system, heat recovery VRF can respond to those differing requirements.

Which type is right for your building?
The best option depends on how the building is used.
Heat pump VRF may suit:

  • Buildings with similar heating and cooling requirements across different zones
  • Applications where simultaneous heating and cooling isn't needed
  • Projects requiring flexible multi-zone temperature control

Heat recovery VRF may suit:

  • Hotels
  • Larger offices
  • Mixed-use buildings
  • Buildings where different zones regularly require heating and cooling at the same time

Toshiba offers both heat pump and heat recovery VRF solutions, including SHRM Advance, Toshiba's latest-generation VRF platform, alongside other systems within the VRF portfolio.

Find the right VRF solution
System selection should consider the building layout, number of zones, heating and cooling loads and how spaces are occupied throughout the day. A suitably qualified Toshiba partner can help determine which VRF approach is appropriate for your project.
