VRF

What Is a VRF Air Conditioning System?

VRF stands for Variable Refrigerant Flow, an air conditioning technology designed to provide flexible heating and cooling across multiple rooms or zones within a building. Unlike a conventional single-split system, VRF can connect multiple indoor units to an outdoor system, allowing different areas of a building to be controlled according to their individual requirements.

How does VRF work?
A VRF system adjusts the flow of refrigerant around the system in response to demand. Rather than simply operating at full capacity or switching off, the system can adapt its output as heating and cooling requirements change. Toshiba's VRF technology combines this variable refrigerant control with inverter-driven compressor technology.  This makes VRF particularly suited to buildings containing multiple rooms or zones that may have different comfort requirements throughout the day.

Where can VRF be used?
VRF can be used across a wide range of applications, including:

  • Offices
  • Hotels
  • Retail
  • Education
  • Healthcare
  • Larger residential developments

Different indoor unit styles, including wall-mounted, cassette and ducted options, also provide flexibility when designing a system around a building. Toshiba's current VRF specifications include a broad selection of compatible indoor unit types.

Heat pump or heat recovery?
Toshiba offers both heat pump and heat recovery VRF solutions. Heat pump systems provide heating or cooling, while three-pipe heat recovery systems can provide simultaneous heating and cooling to different areas where required. Toshiba's SHRMu, for example, is a three-pipe heat recovery system.

Toshiba VRF solutions
The Toshiba VRF range includes solutions for different building sizes and requirements.

SHRM Advance
SHRM Advance is Toshiba's flagship R32 VRF solution
, offering either two-pipe heat pump or three-pipe heat recovery operation. The current system covers 8 to 24HP single modules and supports up to 54 indoor units per system.

SHRMu
SHRMu
is Toshiba's R410A three-pipe heat recovery VRF system, designed for applications requiring simultaneous heating and cooling.

SMMS
The Toshiba SMMS family provides two-pipe heat pump VRF solutions for larger multi-zone applications. Your current 2026 portfolio includes SMMSu within the R410A VRF range.

MiNi SMMS
For projects requiring VRF flexibility on a smaller scale, MiNi SMMS provides a compact option. The current R32 MiNi SMMS range is aimed particularly at large residential and light commercial applications.

Is VRF right for your project?
The most appropriate VRF solution will depend on factors including building size, required capacities, number of zones, heating and cooling requirements and system design.
