Fast-track Toshiba USX Edge Installation Delivers Energy Savings at Chichester College

Carrier Solutions UK was selected to provide an HVAC solution for Chichester College, where an ageing chiller system had reached the end of its operational life. In collaboration with installing contractor Rossair, the team delivered a fast turnaround replacement using the Toshiba Universal Smart X (USX) Series Edge high-capacity modular air-source heat pump.

With time a critical factor, the project required a system that could be delivered and installed quickly to minimise disruption to the college during term time. Carrier Solutions UK had the required USX model in stock, enabling delivery within 48 hours, which is far faster than the typical eight-to-ten week lead time for equipment of this capacity.

The installation, carried out in May 2025, required a 140kW capacity unit to meet the demands of Chichester College’s E Block. The college’s key requirements included improved energy efficiency, quiet operation, compatibility with its existing pumps and seamless integration with its building management system (BMS). Due to the campus's coastal location, the system was also treated with an anti-corrosion coating by specialist contractor Bronz-Glow to ensure long-term durability.

The USX was sited externally on a pre-prepared concrete base at ground level, with a crane lift used for positioning. Despite the narrow access roads to the delivery point, careful planning ensured the unit arrived on time and installation proceeded smoothly. Rossair coordinated mechanical works, while a third-party controls team managed BMS integration. Carrier Solutions UK’s own commissioning and controls engineers supported the process, completing commissioning in June following two weeks of monitored performance checks.

Results

The Toshiba USX high-capacity heat pump now provides 140kW of reliable cooling for Chichester College’s E Block, aligned with the building’s operational schedule of nine hours a day, 22 days per month. The system integrates with the existing BMS, ensuring efficient operation and oversight by the college’s maintenance team.

An analysis of electricity consumption at the college over two four-month periods before and after installation (starting 1 July 2024 and 1 July 2025) showed a significant reduction in energy usage.

Between 8:30 and 18:00 for 22 days per month, the chiller contributed to a reduction of 10,882 kWh, which extrapolates to an estimated energy saving of 43,528 kWh over the four-month testing period and cost saving of approximately £8,700.

Delivered, installed and commissioned within weeks, the project met the college’s urgent need for replacement while enhancing system reliability, energy efficiency and resilience. The addition of coastal protection treatment ensures the installation is safeguarded against the local environment, providing peace of mind for long-term performance.
